To the Campus Community:
As President McCormick noted earlier today in his recent email to the University community, Governor Chris Christie has released the second report of the University of Medicine and Dentistry Advisory Committee, which offers recommendations it believes will advance higher education throughout our state.
The report is available online at http://medicaleducation.rutgers.edu.
In addition to recommending the integration of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, as well as other selected elements of UMDNJ located in central New Jersey, into Rutgers–New Brunswick, the report proposes the consolidation of the assets and resources of Rutgers–Camden and Rowan University into Rowan University.
As you all know, Rutgers–Camden significantly advances the mission of Rutgers University at every level. Our faculty conduct research that places Rutgers at the forefront of many disciplines around the world; the breadth of their scholarship is impressive and contributes greatly to both academe and industry here in New Jersey and across our nation. Rutgers-Camden students receive a world-class education in an intimate setting and greatly benefit from the experience. Rutgers–Camden alumni achieve at the highest levels of their professions, and contribute significantly to their communities, thanks to their experience at our campus. Our dedicated and talented staff deliver exceptional service with deep professionalism. The citizens of the City of Camden and, indeed, all of southern New Jersey benefit from the meaningful civic engagement initiatives that are intrinsic to Rutgers–Camden. The entire Rutgers–Camden community – faculty, students, alumni, and staff – have consistently and uniformly expressed their opposition to being separated from Rutgers.
This proposal rightfully addresses the critical need for increased support of higher education in our region. At the same time, decisions such as these require, by law, the approval of Rutgers’ two governing boards. I expect and welcome a full and robust discussion about this proposal.
Your best thinking on this matter is of critical importance. I invite you to join me during two campus forums for an open discussion about Rutgers–Camden and its role in southern New Jersey:
Thursday, Feb. 2
12:20 to 1:20 p.m.
Gordon Theater, main level, Fine Arts Complex
Monday, Feb. 6
5 to 6 p.m.
Multi-Purpose Room, main level, Campus Center
I look forward to seeing you at these meetings, and to working hard with all of you to protect the interests of our campus.
Sincerely,
Wendell E. Pritchett, J.D., Ph.D
