BACKGROUND: |
Organized by the New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition, the annual Bike/Ped Summit brings together legislators, advocates, planners, businesses, students, bike clubs and shops, and interested citizens for a day of panels, workshops, discussions and most importantly, networking with others who share an interest in a more sustainable lifestyle in New Jersey for all citizens. Each year the summit has been held in a different city with participation from local groups. This year’s summit is being held in cooperation with the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center of the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, Rutgers University. In addition to the summit, the day will end with a short walking tour of New Brunswick, led by Bob Belvin, director of the New Brunswick Free Library and president of the New Brunswick Historical Society. At the same time there will be a short bike ride through New Brunswick led by New Jersey certified cycling instructors of the League of American Bicyclists. The event is open to the public. Advance registration is required by Wednesday, Feb. 22; individual registration is $50 per person and student registration $25 per person. Click here for registration and the agenda. The New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition is a membership-based organization, staffed by volunteers. The coalition’s mission is to encourage and promote cycling, provide a collective voice for cyclists and improve access for cyclists on New Jersey’s roads, highways, and trails. Goals and objectives include advocacy, focusing attention on cycling related issues, sponsoring public events, working with other advocacy groups and promoting cycling as a healthy, enjoyable, efficient and environmentally sustainable means of transportation and recreation. |
