Rutgers-Camden Law Students to Prepare Wills for Veterans

CAMDEN — A group of Rutgers–Camden law
students will work with the Pennsylvania Veterans Museum Law Clinic to draft
wills for veterans during a free event from
11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 24
at the Veterans Museum in Media,
Pa.

“It's important for everyone to have a
will and other estate planning documents,” says Mary Cusack, a third-year
Rutgers–Camden law student working at the Veterans Clinic through a practice
externship. “These documents provide family members with the reassurance that
they are acting in accordance with the wishes of their loved one.”

The Rutgers–Camden law students will be
among a group of volunteer attorneys, paralegals, and notaries who will draft
the documents for the veterans. Notaries will finalize the documents on site,
and veterans will leave with up to date estate planning documents.

Veterans can have four documents prepared
at the event: a last will and testament, a healthcare power of attorney, an
advanced healthcare directive (or living will), and a durable general power of
attorney.

“Veterans are often an underserved
population in communities, especially in terms of legal services,” says Cusack,
of Atlantic Highlands in Monmouth County. “As attorneys and law students, we
have a responsibility to reach out and help underserved populations. Veterans
have done so much for their communities both at home and abroad. Pro bono legal
work is a great way to help give back to those who give so much.”

Cusack says the law students will
gain valuable experience during the one-on-one client contact.

“Clinic work, pro bono, and other on-site
experience with clients presents an exceptional opportunity to refine our
skills,” she says.

The Pennsylvania Veterans Museum Law Clinic is a nonprofit
organization dedicated to assisting veterans with legal needs.
