About the Event

: Women In Media-Newark will present “FootPrints in the City,” their 3rd annual Women’s History Month Film Festival, with a kickoff event on March 1, and a series of events March 2-3, 2012, all at the Paul Robeson Student Center at Rutgers-Newark. This festival presents an international array of films that serve to celebrate the indomitable spirit of women. 

On March 1^st, in conjunction with The Greater Newark Conservancy, a memorial tribute to the late Nobel Prize laureate Dr. Wangari Maathai will be held. Additionally, the accomplishments of illustrious women in the community will be celebrated on each day of the festival: Emmy award winner Henrietta Parker will be honored on Thursday, Zonta Governor-elect Paulette Chatman will be honored on Friday, and political activist Jeannine LaRue will be honored on March 3.  Festival activities will also include interviews with film makers, panel discussions, and vendors.

Featured films include Mountains that Take Wing: Angela Davis & Yuri Kochiyama A Conversation on Life, Struggles & Liberation; Sara Terry’s Fambul Tok which tells the story of healing in post-conflict Sierra Leone through the intimate stories of perpetrators and victims; The Witches of Gambaga which is the extraordinary story of a community of women condemned to live as witches in Northern Ghana; and Positive and Pregnant, a docudrama that examines the importance of safe sexual practices.

A panel discussion moderated by health care activist Dr. Maisha Amen including Ayanna Woltz, M.D. from Somerset OB/Gyn, and representatives  from the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Center at UMDNJ will follow the screening of Positive and Pregnant. There are also visually stunning film shorts on compelling topics, and a public service video on the aftermath of suicide.  Panel discussions, interviews with film makers as well as Q & A sessions will follow the sessions.

 Women In Media-Newark is hosting this festival with sponsorship from the Rutgers –Newark Office of the Chancellor and the Community Partnerships and Civic Engagement program, Rutgers – Newark campus, with support from the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Center at UMDNJ and the Greater Newark Conservancy.
